Key responsibilities
Pre - fabrication and material control
- Review drawings, specifications and the QCP before fabrication starts; flag inspection and hold points to production.
- Verify incoming steel (plate, channel, angle, RHS, pipe) against mill certificates, grade and dimensions; maintain material traceability through heat numbers.
- Confirm that approved Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS/PQR) are in place and that welders hold valid, in-scope qualifications (SANS/ISO 9606-1 or AWS D1.1).
- Check consumables storage, electrode baking and handling.
In-process inspection
- Inspect fit-up, joint preparation, root gaps, alignment and tack welds before welding.
- Monitor welding parameters (amperage, voltage, travel speed, preheat and interpass temperature) against the WPS.
- Carry out dimensional checks on frames, stringers, legs and idler frames: length, squareness, diagonals, flatness, hole positions and idler centres.
Final inspection and NDT
- Perform 10% visual inspection (VT) of completed welds to ISO 5817 / AWS D1.1 acceptance levels as specified.
- Perform Level 2 Magnetic Particle Testing on fillet and butt welds, lifting lugs and critical joints; interpret and report results.
- Perform Level 2 Ultrasonic Testing on full-penetration butt welds, thick sections and critical structural joints; set up and calibrate equipment, size and evaluate indications.
- Complete NDT procedures, inspections and technique sheets for approval by the Level 3 where required.
- Raise non-conformance reports (NCRs), specify repairs and re-inspect repaired welds.
Surface preparation and coating
- Verify blast profile, cleanliness, DFT and coating system against the painting specification where in scope.
Documentation and client interface
- Complete inspection and test records, NDT reports, dimensional reports and release notes.
- Compile the final data book (QCP sign - offs, material certificates, welder qualifications, NDT reports, NCRs).
- Ensure NDT equipment, gauges and calibration blocks are in date and calibrated.
- Support root - cause analysis and continuous improvement of welding quality and repair rates.
